Marking Criteria of the IELTS Listening Section

Parameters where your answers will be marked wrong:

Wrong spelling

• Your answers are grammatically incorrect ( in the case of sentence completion types of questions)
• You wrote the incorrect number of words/numbers. (Always read the instructions before attempting the listening section.)

Listening Section Strategies

For achieving the desired band score, you will need to strategize the whole thing. Here is how you can do that:

Predict the answers
In the IELTS Listening section, you may be able to predict:

• Type of information required (name, place, figures, postcode)
• Type of word required ( noun, verb, or adjective)
• Synonyms or similar words and phrases by paraphrasing the words

Read the Instructions

Before attempting the listening section, make sure to go through the instructions carefully.  In sections 1, 2, and 3 you will be given time to review your answers.  You can utilize the time to do the following:

• Re-read the questions to predict the answers
• Highlight the keywords while reading
• Look for the distracting words like-(However, maybe, but, instead), as they can change the complete meaning of the sentence.

PLBS Strategy for building listening skills

P- Pick a topic (Pick a topic to listen to for a minimum of 10 minutes)

L- Listen to the Topic (Listen to the topic and note down the important keywords)

B- Brainstorm the topic (Try to find the meaning of the recording and the synonym of the words)

S- Summarize the topic (Write the summary of the topic in bullet points)

Be careful while answering the questions and do not mix up the answers. Spelling and Grammar count so don’t be in a hurry to submit the answers, revise them.
